[Source] Medicinal material source: It is the stroma of the fungus Hypocrea bamboo.

[Original morphology] The stipe is an irregular spherical shape, surrounding the internodes of the bamboo culm. It is pink or light flesh color when fresh, and turns into milky white, grayish white or grayish brown later, with a diameter of 2-10(-20)cm; the inside is light red to grayish white and fleshy. Ascocarps are arranged in 2-4 layers, all buried in the stoma, ovate, elliptical or nearly spherical, (500-780)μm×(250-590)μm, with cinnamon-colored walls. Ascus is nearly cylindrical, with spore part (120-150)μm×(14-19)μm. There are 8 ascospores arranged in a single row, broadly oval, colorless at first, then turning light purple, and finally brown, (15-21)μm×(11-15)μm. Lateral threads numerous, linear.

[Habitat distribution] Ecological environment: Grown on various bamboo poles in alpine coniferous forests and mixed coniferous and broad-leaved forests at an altitude of 2000-3500m.

[Properties] 1. Identification of properties: The stoma is slightly oblate spherical, with a diameter of 1.5-8cm. The back is raised, and the depression at the base often contains remnants of bamboo branches. The surface is yellow to light brown, smooth or slightly uneven. The body is light and loose. The cross section is slightly fan-shaped and yellowish white.

[Chemical composition] The stroma of bamboo fungus contains cytochalasin D and engleromycin.

[Pharmacological Action] Cytochalasin D isolated from the fruiting body of bamboo fungus (Mercoccus) can specifically affect the arrangement of the microfilament system of mammalian cells, resist viral infection of cells, and has the effect of effectively killing Trichomonas vaginalis. It has been reported that cytochalasin is a new type of cytotoxic substance that can inhibit cytoplasmic division and cause the cell nucleus to escape from the cell at high concentrations. Bamboo mushroom ether extract has an inhibitory effect on mouse sarcoma and mouse cervical cancer. A crystalline component in the extract was found to be significantly cytotoxic. A single intraperitoneal injection of 5 mg/kg in mice resulted in immediate death. Bamboo mushroom powder has shown a certain alleviating effect in the treatment of a few cases of liver cancer, lung cancer, gastric cancer, and rectal cancer. Except for gastrointestinal reactions, no obvious effects on the hematopoietic system were found.

[Identification] (1) Take a cross section of the stroma of this product and observe it under ultraviolet light. The hyphae and ascocarp will show light blue fluorescence.
