【English name】root of Berry-bearing Aspidocarya

[Other names] Biaoteng, Huaitong, Hanfangji, Tufangji.

[Source] Medicinal material source: The stem of the cone vine of the Menispermaceae family.

[Original form] Cone vine vine, up to 7mm long or longer. The surface of the vine has wrinkled stripes and is covered with soft hairs. Simple leaf; petiole 8-15cm long; leaf blade papery, ovate-cordate or broadly ovate-cordate, 9-18cm long, 8-16cm wide, apex acute to acuminate, base often concave-cordate, entire or occasionally 3-lobed, pubescent on both sides, usually denser below, sometimes only pubescent on veins above. Panicle, usually about 30cm long, sometimes up to 50cm, with sparse branches and pubescent; male flower sepals are usually 12, arranged in 4 whorls, the outermost whorl is tiny, 1-1.5mm long, the middle whorl is linear-oblong, with only 1 vein, 2-2.5mm long, the inner whorl is spoon-shaped, with 3 veins 2.5-3.3mm long, all pubescent on the back, the innermost whorl is ovate, glabrous on the back, 3-3.5mm long, about 2mm wide, 6 petals, light yellow, about 2mm long, 1-1.5mm wide; 6 stamens, connate; female flower sepals and petals are similar to male flowers; 6 sterile stamens, rod-shaped; 3 carpels, stigma capitate or 3-lobed. The infructescence is slightly stout, with hairy quilts and pedicels 1-1.5cm long. The drupe is oval, about 2cm long, and red when ripe. The flowering period is April-May, and the fruiting period is September-October.

[Habitat distribution] Ecological environment: Growing in dense forests in valleys at an altitude of 600-1200m.

【Functions and indications】 Dispel wind and unclog meridians; promote diuresis and relieve stranguria. It is used to treat rheumatic pain, pain caused by overwork, edema, and painful urination.

[Usage and Dosage] For oral use: decocted in water, 9-15g; or soaked in wine.

[Discussions by various scholars] "Xinhua Compendium of Materia Medica": Root: bitter in taste, cold in nature. It has the function of regulating qi and blood, relieving stranguria and promoting diuresis, and is used for rheumatic pain, pain caused by strain, edema and other symptoms.
