[Source] Medicinal material source: The rhizome of the Polygonum aviculare plant of the Polygonaceae family.

[Original form] Perennial herb, 10-40cm high. The rhizome is thick, hooked, dark brown, densely covered with remaining old stems, leaves and stipule sheaths, and has many fibrous roots. The stem is erect, with 4-6 nodes, and is glabrous. Stipule sheath is membranous, brown-rusty, cylindrical, slightly wider at the top, and oblique at the apex. Basal leaves have long petioles, 7-8cm long, with downward-delayed leaf wings on the upper part, leaf blades narrowly ovate-lanceolate or ovate-oblong, 3-7.5cm long, 1-3cm wide, acuminate at the apex, rounded or slightly cordate at the base, entire or wavy at the margin, densely pubescent beneath; stem leaves have short petioles or are sessile, upper leaves are triangular-lanceolate, sessile, base cordate, clasping the stem, uppermost leaves are very small, linear or spiny, sometimes absent. The spike inflorescence is solitary at the top of the stem, pink, cylindrical, short and thick, with dense flowers; the bracts are membranous, rusty, elliptical or broadly ovate, with a tail tip; the perianth is deeply lobed into 5 parts, the lobes are oblong or elliptical, about 3mm long; there are 8 stamens, and the anthers are violet; there is 1 stamen, and the styles are 3, slender. Achenes triangular. The flowering period is July-August, and the fruiting period is August-September.

[Habitat distribution] Ecological environment: Grown in volcanic ash gravel wastelands in the alpine zone or between high mountain rock crevices.

【Nature and flavor】 Bitter; slightly cold; slightly toxic

【Functions and indications】Resolving phlegm and relieving cough; clearing away heat and detoxifying; cooling blood and stopping bleeding. It is used for cough with a lot of sputum, dysentery, diarrhea, carbuncle, swelling and pus, swollen and painful gums, oral erosion, metrorrhagia, and hemorrhoidal bleeding.

[Usage and Dosage] For oral use: decocted in water, 5-10g, fresh product 15-25g. For external use: take appropriate amount, decoct in water and gargle; or grind with vinegar and apply on the juice.
