[Original form] Oak is an evergreen shrub or small tree, 2-10m tall. The branches and trunks often have sparse thorns, especially on the twigs. The leaves are leathery, alternate, petiolate, 3-10mm long; the leaf blades are broadly ovate, ovate to ovate-elliptical, 3-8cm long, 2-5cm wide, acuminate at the apex, rounded or broadly cuneate at the base, glabrous on both sides, with serrated edges; there are 4-6 pairs of lateral veins. The flowers are dioecious, with axillary racemes, 1-2 cm long and pubescent; sepals are 4-6, oval; petals are absent; male flowers have many stamens, and the disk is composed of many glands located outside the stamens; the disk of female flowers is disc-shaped, with slightly wavy edges, and the ovary has one chamber with two parietal placentas; the style is short, and the stigma has two shallow lobes. The berries are spherical, 3-4mm in diameter, black when ripe, with a persistent style at the tip. 2 (-3) seeds. Flowering period is summer.
