[Source] It is the root or vine of the Myrsinaceae plant , Saccharum officinale . It can be harvested throughout the year, washed, sliced ​​and dried.

【Original form】 Evergreen woody vine-like shrub. The roots are very long. The branches are slender and gray-brown in appearance; young branches are covered with rusty glandular hairs. Leaves are alternate, arranged in 2 rows, oblong-ovate, 0.5-1.8 cm long, 0.3-0.9 cm wide, obtuse at the apex, round or cordate at the base, with yellow glandular hairs on the main veins, and dense golden oil spots on the leaves; petioles are short. Flowers are unisexual and dioecious, small, greenish-white or purple, and petiolate; clustered inflorescences are attached to side branches or terminal branches, with slightly scaly bases; calyx has 4-5 lobes, separate, persistent, 4-5 petals, arranged in a shingle-like manner, with smooth and hairless back; 4-5 stamens, attached to the petals, ovary degenerates in male flowers, conical, spherical or ovoid in female flowers, style cylindrical, stigma capitate. The drupe is spherical, red, and about 4 mm in diameter. Flowering period is from April to May. The fruiting period is from August to September.

[Habitat distribution] It grows in the relatively shady and moist places on the hillsides at the edge of shrub forests. Distributed in Guangdong, Yunnan, Guizhou and other places.

[Properties] The root is gray-brown on the outside, reddish-brown on the inside, and has chrysanthemum patterns on the cross section.

【Nature and flavor】 Bitter, warm.

【Functions and indications】Promote blood circulation, dissipate blood stasis, tonify the kidney and strengthen the waist. Treat irregular menstruation, amenorrhea, anemia, bruises and fractures.

[Usage and Dosage] For oral use: decoct in water, 0.5 to 1 liang. For external use: mash and apply.
