How to use and dosage of rush

Juncus effusus, a Chinese medicinal name. It is the dried stem pith of the Juncus effusus plant of the Juncaceae family. Cut the stems from late summer to autumn, dry them, remove the pith, straighten them, and tie them into small bundles. This product is thin cylindrical, up to 2250px long and 0.1-7.5px in diameter. The surface is white or light yellowish white with fine longitudinal lines. It is light, soft, slightly elastic, easy to break, and the broken surface is white. Slight odor, light taste.

Juncus effusus, perennial herb, 40-100cm tall. The rhizome runs horizontally and is densely covered with fibrous roots. The stems are clustered, erect, slender columnar, 1.5-4mm in diameter, and filled with milky white pith, which occupies most of the stems. The leaf sheaths are reddish brown or light yellow, up to 15 cm long; the leaves are degenerate and thorn-like. Inflorescence pseudo-lateral, cymose, many-flowered, dense or sparse; bracts connected to the stem 5-20cm long; flowers light green, with short petioles, 2-2.5mm long; tepals 6, linear-lanceolate, arranged in 2 whorls, the outer whorl slightly longer, with membranous margins and pubescent back; stamens 3 or rarely 6, about 2/3 of the length of the tepals, anthers slightly shorter than filaments; pistil 1, ovary superior, 3-chambered, style very short with 3 stigmas.

The capsule is oblong, with an obtuse or slightly concave tip, about the same length as the perianth or slightly longer, and contains three complete septa. There are many seeds, which are ovate-oblong, brown and about 0.4 mm long. The flowering period is from June to July, and the fruiting period is from July to October.

Efficacy: Clears heart fire and promotes urination. Indications: Used for restlessness, insomnia, oliguria, painful and astringent urination, and mouth and tongue ulcers. Related combination, used for epistaxis: grind one liang of rush into powder, add one qian of cinnabar, and take two qian each time with rice drink. (Shengji Zonglu) Used for clearing heat and promoting diuresis, symptoms of dysuria, and painful urination: used together with Akebia, Dianthus superbus, Plantago seed, etc., such as Bazhengsan. (Heji Fangju) Usage and dosage: 1-3g.
