The leaf sheaths are reddish brown or light yellow, up to 15 cm long; the leaves are degenerate and thorn-like. Inflorescence pseudo-lateral, cymose, many-flowered, dense or sparse; bracts connected to the stem 5-20cm long; flowers light green, with short petioles, 2-2.5mm long; tepals 6, linear-lanceolate, arranged in 2 whorls, the outer whorl slightly longer, with membranous margins and pubescent back; stamens 3 or rarely 6, about 2/3 of the length of the tepals, anthers slightly shorter than filaments; pistil 1, ovary superior, 3-chambered, style very short with 3 stigmas. The capsule is oblong, with an obtuse or slightly concave tip, about the same length as the perianth or slightly longer, and contains three complete septa. There are many seeds, which are ovate-oblong, brown and about 0.4 mm long. The flowering period is from June to July, and the fruiting period is from July to October. Efficacy: Clears heart fire and promotes urination. Indications: Used for restlessness, insomnia, oliguria, painful and astringent urination, and mouth and tongue ulcers.
