[Original form] Sage, perennial herb. The stem is erect, 40-80cm high. It has a thick rhizome densely covered with oval-lanceolate brown scales. Leaves opposite; petiole 3-25cm long; leaf blade cordate or ovate-halberd-shaped, 4-18cm long, 3.5-13.5cm wide, with irregular double crenates on the margin, nearly glabrous on both sides except for the more or less densely pubescent veins on the upper side and ciliate margins. The inflorescence is a cyme with 2-6 flowers. The bracts are ovate, with acuminate or acute tips. The calyx is bell-shaped, shallowly 2-lobed or nearly truncated. The corolla is yellow, with a tube 2 cm long, and the rim is two-lipped. The upper lip is ovate, slightly dome-shaped, and the lower lip is obliquely flat, 3-lobed, and the middle lobe is obcordate. The fertile stamens extend to the upper lip, slightly exposed or not extended, and the filaments are filiform. The style extends slightly outside the corolla, and the tip is unequally lobed. The nutlets are obovate, brown, smooth and hairless. Flowering period is from July to September.
