Leaves are opposite, sometimes with 1 or 2 completely divided leaflets; leaf blades are obovate to oblong ovate, 3-10 cm long, 2-6 cm wide, rounded to acuminate at the apex, obtuse, serrated at the margin, green above, dark red below, and heart-shaped at the base; petiole is 1-7 cm long, nearly sessile near the inflorescence. Cyme inflorescence, terminal and axillary, with about 5 florets in each cyme, 4 mm in diameter; calyx bell-shaped, with fine hairs, calyx teeth triangular, with a small tip; corolla 2-lipped, purple-red in the upper part, yellow-white in the lower part; 2 developed stamens, stigma 2-lobed, all extending outside the corolla. Nutlets ovate. Flowering period is May. The fruiting period is from May to June.
