[Other names] Atractylodes japonica, salt water noodle fruit, Pu Zai, sea hemp, sea ash tree, and bow-back tree.

[Source] Medicinal material source: leaves, bark or flowers of Hibiscus tiliaceus of the Malvaceae family.

[Original form] Hibiscus tiliaceus is an evergreen shrub or tree, 4-10m high. The diameter at breast height is up to 60cm; the bark is grayish white; the twigs are glabrous or nearly glabrous, rarely covered with stellate hairs or stellate soft hairs. Leaves herbaceous; petiole 3-8cm long; stipules leaf-shaped, oblong, about 2cm long, about 12mm wide, rounded at the apex, caducous, covered with stellate stream pubescence; leaves nearly rounded or broadly ovate, 8-15cm in diameter, with pointed apex, sometimes short acuminate, base cordate, entire or with inconspicuous fine crenates, green above, covered with very fine stellate hairs when young, gradually becoming smooth and hairless, densely covered with grayish white stellate pubescence below; leaf veins 7 or 9. Inflorescence terminal or axillary, with constant flowers arranged in aggregate inflorescences, peduncle 4-5cm long; pedicel 1-3cm long, with a pair of stipule-like bracts at the base; bracteoles 7-10, linear-lanceolate, tomentose, united into a cup shape below the middle; calyx 1.5-2.5cm long, connate at the base, with 5 calyx lobes, lanceolate, tomentose; corolla bell-shaped, 6-7cm in diameter, petals yellow, dark purple at the inner base, obovate, about 4.5cm long, densely covered with yellow stellate pubescence on the outside; stamens about 3cm long, smooth and glabrous; style branches 5, covered with fine glandular hairs. Hugo is oval, about 2 cm long, pubescent, with 5 valves, and woody. The seeds are smooth and reniform. Flowering period is from June to August.

[Habitat distribution] Produced in Fujian, Taiwan, Guangdong, Hainan and Guangxi. Mostly cultivated.

[Properties] Identification of properties: Most leaves are broken or wrinkled, intact leaves are nearly round or broadly ovate, 8-15cm in diameter, with a pointed tip, sometimes short and acuminate, base cordate, entire or with inconspicuous fine round teeth, leaves densely covered with stellate soft hairs on the underside, with 7-9 veins; petiole 3-8cm long, brittle, with slight odor and taste. The flowers are mostly wrinkled into a ball or irregular shape, and are covered with hairs all over; the calyx is bell-shaped, with 5 lobes at the tip, and there are 7-10 bracts outside the calyx tube, which are linear-lanceolate, and the pedicels are 1-3cm long. The calyx and bracts are covered with hairs; the corolla is bell-shaped, the petals are yellow, dark purple at the base inside, obovate, about 4.5cm long, and densely covered with stellate soft hairs on the outside, the stamen column is about 3cm long, smooth and hairless, and there are 5 style branches, covered with fine glandular hairs. Light and crisp. Slight odor, light taste.

【Functions and indications】 Clears the lungs and relieves cough; detoxifies and reduces swelling. Mainly used for lung heat cough; sores, boils, swelling and pain; cassava poisoning

[Usage and Dosage] For oral use: decoction, 30-60g; or mash into juice. For external use: mash appropriate amount and apply.

[Discussions by various scholars] "Xinhua Compendium of Materia Medica": It has the functions of reducing fever, stopping vomiting and relieving cough. Used for fever, cough and bronchitis: leaves, applied externally to treat swelling and pus.
