[Source] Medicinal material source: The root of Gentiana macrophylla of the Gentianaceae family.

[Original form] Perennial herb, 30-85cm tall. The whole plant is hairless, with dark brown residual leaves at the base. The taproot is thick, yellow and conical. The stem is thick, yellow-green or purple at the top, and unbranched. The basal leaves are rosette-shaped with long petioles. The leaf blades are oblong-spoon-shaped, 5-14cm long and 1.2-2.5cm wide, with obtuse apex and gradually narrowed base. There are 3-5 veins, which are obvious on the underside. The stem leaves are opposite and sessile. The leaf blades are ovate-elliptical, 3.5-8cm long and 1.3-3.5cm wide. The leaves on the upper part of the stem are smaller, with obtuse apex, rounded base, and semi-amplexicaul. The flowers are densely packed in a paniculate compound cyme; the calyx tube is very short, 4-lobed near the base, and the lobes are obtuse at the tip; the corolla is yellow-green with purple stripes, short, 5-lobed, the lobes are oblong, the apex is often concave, and there are 2 purple glandular spots at the base; there are 5 stamens, inserted at the bend of the corolla; the ovary is ovate, sessile, the style is not obvious, the stigma is small, and 2-lobed. Capsule oval, sessile. The seeds are dark brown, nearly round, with fine reticulate patterns on the surface and broad wings around the edges. Flowering and fruiting period is from May to August.

[Habitat distribution] Ecological environment: Growing in alpine grasslands and shrubs at an altitude of 3000-4600m.

[Properties] Identification of properties: The taproot is round or conical, twisted and not straight, with the lower part divided or not divided into rootlets, 10-25cm long and 0.5-2cm in diameter, with remnants of the stem base and membranous leaf sheaths at the top. The surface is brown with longitudinal or twisted wrinkles. It is hard and brittle, easy to break, with yellow-brown bark and yellow-white wood. It has a faint smell and tastes extremely bitter.

It is used to treat lung heat cough, tonsillitis, gastritis, dysentery, chronic cholecystitis, nephritis, mastitis, ascariasis, burns, traumatic injury, carbuncle, swelling and infection.

[Usage and Dosage] For oral use: decoction, 1.5-3g or soak in wine. For external use: take appropriate amount, grind into powder and apply on the affected area.
