[Source] Medicinal material source: The bark of Magnolia officinalis, a plant of the Magnoliaceae family.

【Original form】 Evergreen tree, about 12m tall or higher. Young branches, petioles and flower buds initially more or less hairy, eventually becoming glabrous. Leaves are alternate; petiole is 3-5cm long; stipule scar is one-third to one-quarter of the petiole; leaves are leathery, leaf blade is oblanceolate, oblong or oblong-elliptic, 10-26cm long, 4-10cm wide, apex acuminate or caudate-acuminate, narrowing to base below two-thirds, glabrous above, midrib with reddish-brown pubescent or scattered procumbent fine hairs below, lateral veins 12-24 pairs. The flowers are fragrant, with oblong-ovate buds; the pedicels are thick; the flowers are 7.5 cm in diameter, white or yellow with a red halo, or rose pink, or bright red; there are 6-12 perianths, the outer one is obovate-oblong, the inner one is obovate-spatulate, and the base gradually narrows into claws; there are many stamens, 1-1.8 cm long, and the connective extends into a triangular tip; the stamen group is cylindrical, and the carpels are glabrous. The aggregate fruit is purple-red, ovate-oblong, 7-9cm long, (艸骨)(艸过程) dorsally cracked, with obvious tubercles and a short beak at the tip. The flowering period is May-June, and the fruiting period is August-September.

[Habitat distribution] Ecological environment: Growing in mountain forests at an altitude of 600-2000m.

【Properties】 Identification of properties: The bark is rolled or grooved. The outer surface is brown or yellow-brown, rough, with obvious and raised transverse lenticels, and most of the lenticels are fibrous. It has a slight fragrance and tastes slightly bitter and astringent.
