Hairy-calyx fragrant tea plant, perennial herb or shrub, 0.5-3m tall. With creeping stems. The stem is obtusely quadrangular, with shallow grooves, often purple-red, and densely covered with fine soft hairs. Leaves are opposite; petiole is 0.6-5cm long; leaf blade is ovate-elliptical or ovate-needle, 2.5-18cm long, 0.8-6.5cm wide, gradually pointed at the tip, broadly cuneate or nearly circular at the base, and slightly pubescent at the top of the petiole. The spike panicles are terminal and axillary, 2.5-35cm long, densely covered with white curly short soft hairs, composed of densely packed multi-flowered cymes, with peduncles about 2mm long, initially covered with white wool, then gradually becoming less hairy; calyx teeth 5, ovate, nearly equal, about 1/3 of the calyx length, calyx erect, enlarged, about 4mm long when fruiting; corolla lavender or purple, 6-7mm long, covered with sparse soft hairs on the outside, with shallow sac-like protrusions at the base of the corolla tube; 4 stamens, hidden; style sometimes slightly extended. The nutlets are oval, very small, and dirty yellow. The flowering period is from July to November, and the fruiting period is from November to December.

The total extract has an antispasmodic effect on the contraction of pulmonary artery and mesenteric artery strips induced by norepinephrine and high potassium. The total extract can antagonize the contraction of bovine basilar artery strips induced by 5-hydroxytryptamine and high potassium, with IC50 of 51.08±8.5μg/ml and 40.05±10.6μg/ml respectively. The root extract of water chestnut has a significant inhibitory effect on the contraction of guinea pig colon band induced by Ca2 after histamine or high potassium depolarization. The dose-effect curve shows that the extract has a non-competitive antagonistic effect. In Ca2-free solution, the extract is similar to papaverine and can inhibit amine-induced colonic contraction. This indicates that water chestnut has a significant inhibitory effect on the contraction caused by intracellular Ca2 in colon cells, but has no significant effect on the contraction caused by extracellular Ca2.
