[Original form] Daphne maculatum is an evergreen small tree, 3-10m tall. The bark is brown, the cork is corky, and the inner bark is black. Simple leaves are alternate and clustered at the branch ends; petioles are about 2 cm long and reddish; leaf blades are oblong or obovate, about 8 cm long, acute at the apex, narrowly cuneate at the base, entire or with coarse serrations at the top, smooth and shiny on the upper side, pale on the lower side with wart-like protrusions. Racemes are axillary; dioecious; perianth is calyx-shaped and not persistent; flowers are small; male flowers have 4-5 perianth segments, 8 stamens, short and free filaments, and large anthers; female flowers have 6-8 perianth segments, 2-chambered ovary, each with 2 ovules, and 2 styles that are persistent. The drupe is broadly oval, black, and has a fleshy exocarp.
