[Original form] Red-backed indigo is a perennial herb, up to 1m tall, with a lignified stem base. Leaves are opposite; leaves are relatively broad, elliptic-oblong to oblong-lanceolate, with pointed to acuminate tips, base more or less amplexicaul and auricularia, margins slightly serrated, backside reddish purple with a pale purple-blue sheen. The spike inflorescence is cylindrical, 5-8cm long; the bracts are arranged in a shingle-like manner, the obovate surface is spoon-shaped, the top has a small pointed tip slightly turned outward, and is covered with tomentose; the calyx has 5 lobes, which are linear, slightly unequal in length, and covered with tomentose; the corolla is lavender, about 2cm long, with fine hairs on the outside and 2 rows of soft hairs on the inside, and the corolla has 5 lobes, which are slightly unequal; the stamens are didyna, and the filaments are connected by a membrane at the base. The capsule is about 8mm long. With 4 seeds. Flowering period: spring.

[Habitat distribution] It is cultivated in courtyards of Guangdong, Guangxi and Yunnan. Native to Myanmar.

【Functions and indications】Promote blood circulation and dissipate blood stasis; clear away heat and detoxify. Mainly used for irregular menstruation; postpartum lochia; damp-heat dysentery; furuncle and carbuncle; traumatic injury; fracture

[Usage and Dosage] For oral use: decoction, 15-30g. For external use: Take appropriate amount of fresh product and mash it for application.
