Rhamnus davuri is a shrub or small tree that can reach 10m in height. The twigs are stout, nearly opposite, brown or reddish brown, often with large buds at the top that do not form thorns, or with short thorns at the bifurcation. Leaves are opposite on long branches, or clustered on short branches; petiole is 1.5-4cm long; leaf blade is papery, ovate or elliptical, 4-13cm long, 2-6cm wide, with pointed or acuminate tip, cuneate or nearly rounded base, finely serrated margin, often with red glands at the tooth tips, glabrous and bright green above, sparsely pubescent with white and light green hairs along the veins below, 4-6 pairs of lateral veins, and obvious reticulate veins. Flowers are unisexual, dioecious, yellow-green; female flowers are 1-3 in leaf axils or several to 20 in clusters at the ends of short branches, with reduced stamens; calyx is 4-lobed, with narrow ovate lobes and acute tips; ovary is spherical, with 2-3 chambers; style is 2-3 shallowly lobed or half-cleft; male flowers have 4 stamens and sterile pistils. The drupe is spherical, black when ripe, 5-7mm in diameter, with a persistent calyx tube at the base. The fruit stalk is 1-1.2cm long. The seeds are oval, yellowish brown, with a narrow longitudinal groove on the dorsal side. The flowering period is May-June, and the fruiting period is July-October.

Ecological environment: Grown in the undergrowth of hillside forests below 1800m above sea level, in thickets or in the shade and wet places at the edge of forests and ditches.

The fruit contains emodin, chryso-phanol, and kaempferol.

Bitter; sweet; cool; slightly toxic

Clears away heat and detoxifies; has a laxative and kills parasites; relieves cough and eliminates phlegm. It is used to treat carbuncle, scrofula, scabies, caries, mouth ulcer, toothache, abdominal distension and constipation, cough, phlegm and wheezing, edema, bronchitis and emphysema.

For internal use: decoct in water; or grind into powder; or soak in wine. For external use: take appropriate amount and mash it for application; or boil it in water and use it for gargling.
