[Original form] Pterocarpus australis is a large tree. The bark is smooth and the young branches are densely covered with hairs. Leaves are alternate; petioles are stout and striated; stipules are striated and fall off early; bracteoles are striated or deeply palmately lobed; leaf blades are leathery, nearly round or oblong, entire, shallowly lobed or coarsely toothed, 24-34cm long, 14-29cm wide, truncate or nearly round at the apex, with shallow lobes or apices, base cordate, sparsely hairy or almost hairless above, densely covered with light yellow or grayish stellate hairs beneath; basal veins 7-12, veins protruding on the back of the leaf. The flower is solitary, white, and fragrant; the sepals are 5, linear-oblong, 9cm long and 7mm wide, densely covered with yellow-brown hairs on the outside and white long soft hairs on the inside; the petals are 5, linear-oblong, slightly cuneate, 7mm wide, slightly shorter than the calyx, and glabrous; the staminodes are club-shaped and hairy; the stamens are 15, each 3 of which are grouped together and alternate with the staminodes; the ovary is oblong, with 5 edges and 5 chambers. The capsule is woody, oblong-cylindrical, stalked, with 5 inconspicuous depressions or shallow grooves, 10-15cm long, 5-5.5cm wide, initially covered with light reddish-brown hairs, then hairless, with obtuse apex and gradually narrowed base, and multiple seeds in each chamber. The seeds are obliquely ovate, flattened, and winged. The wings are large, thin, brown, and smooth.
