Effects and functions of Sabina vulgaris

Effects and functions of Sabina vulgaris

Recently, major TV channels have launched various health programs, and food programs have also introduced special health-preserving dietary therapy methods. All aspects show that the concept of health preservation is gradually deepening in people's understanding. Next, we will introduce a health-preserving medicinal material, Serinopsis pilosula.

[Other names] Xinjiang juniper, Gemini cypress (Illustrated Guide to Higher Plants of China), Alcha, Honing-Altz (Mongolian name).

[Source] The branches , leaves and cones of the Cupressaceae plant. Harvested in spring and summer, and sun-dried.

[Original form] Evergreen creeping shrub, rarely a tree. The branches are thin, and the twigs will smell bad when rubbed. The bark of old branches is dark brown and smooth. The leaves are arranged alternately; the scale leaves cover each other tightly, 1-2.5 mm long, obtuse or slightly pointed at the apex, entire, with an elliptical gland in the middle of the lower side; the thorny leaves often grow on young plants, and sometimes mature plants also have a small number of thorny leaves, which are arranged closely, extending obliquely upward without spreading, 3-7 mm long, concave on the upper side, with a distinct midrib, and covered with white powder. Dioecious, female cones have two scales. The cones are berry-like, kidney-shaped, growing at the top of longer and drooping branches, irregularly obovate, nearly round or oval, with a round, flat or forked apex, 5-9 mm long, with white powder, dark brown-purple or purple-black when ripe, containing 1-5 (mostly 2-3) seeds; the seeds are nearly oval, slightly flat, with ridges, and a small amount of resin grooves.

[Habitat distribution] Grown in sandy land, rocky arid mountains and under forests. Distributed in Xinjiang, Qinghai, Gansu, Inner Mongolia, Shaanxi and other places.

[Pharmacological action] Sabina vulgaris contains 0.2% of hinokitiol and podophyllotoxin. The latter has a harmful effect on mouse sarcoma, causing bleeding and necrosis. The volatile oils it contains can act as local irritants. Long-term application to the skin and mucous membranes can cause severe inflammation. Excessive use can cause severe gastrointestinal inflammatory reactions, causing vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain and even death. Some people have used it to induce abortion, but this was actually the result of systemic poisoning and did not have any specific effect on the uterus. If dogs are given hinokitiol or infusions of plants of this genus for three consecutive weeks, it will not cause fatty degeneration of the liver. However, if the dose is too large, the dog may die within two days (there will be severe inflammation in the small intestine). Hinokitiol does not affect the tension of the guinea pig uterus, but can cancel its spontaneous activity; it can immediately stop the activity of the isolated rabbit small intestine, which is reversible and is not affected by pilocarpine. Hinobol can increase the muscle tension of leeches, while the infusion can reduce it, so the effects of the two are not exactly the same.
