[Source] Medicinal material source: the larvae or cocoons of the ricinus silkworm, an animal of the family Seraphidae.

[Original form] Castor silkworm, a large moth with a wingspan of 100-125mm. The head, antennae and chest are brown. The head is small and the compound eyes are large, oval, and gray-black. Antennae pinnate, short, with white hairs at base. The wings are brown, with the top of the forewing protruding outward and a dark brown oval spot on the base. The wing surface has brown, white, yellow and pink patterns, and there is a wavy pattern running vertically across the forewings and hindwings. There is a large translucent crescent-shaped white spot in the middle, with a brown-black edge at the front edge and a yellow rear edge. The middle is white and translucent. The female has an enlarged abdomen. The larvae are dark brown when they first hatch, turning light yellow-green at the second instar. After the third instar, white powder appears on the body surface, and the body is white, with wart-like protrusions and markings on each body segment. The cocoon is in the shape of a torreya nut and is white in color.

【Habitat distribution】Ecological environment: 6 to 7 generations occur every year. The larvae feed on castor leaves.

[Chemical composition] Pupa contains protein, peptides, lipids, cytochrome C, choline, B vitamins, biotin, inositol, glycogen, and phosphorylase. Fatty acids are mainly oleic acid, linoleic acid and linolenic acid, with a small amount of C14 acid. Pupa hemolymph contains diglyceride lipoproteins I and II, cholesterol, lipids, phospholipids, amino acids, and carotenoids. Phospholipids include phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylethanolamine, and sphingomyelin. Carotenoids include β-carotene and lutein. Amino acids include aspartic acid, threonine, serine, glutamic acid, threonine, glycine, alanine, valine, methionine, isoleucine, tyrosine, phenylalanine, histidine, lysine, arginine, etc.

【Functions and indications】Dispel wind and dampness; relieve pain. Mainly used for rheumatic pain and joint discomfort

[Usage and Dosage] For oral use: decocted in water, 5-10g; or made into pills or powder.
