[Original morphology] Perennial herb, 1 to 1.5 m tall; with creeping rhizomes. The leaves are linear-lanceolate, 20 to 30 cm long, 2.5 to 5 cm wide, with a long tail at the tip, gradually narrowing at the base, and glabrous on both sides; the ligule is lanceolate, 2 to 4.5 cm long, membranous, and glabrous. The peduncle is 1 to 3 cm long; the bracts are lanceolate and brown; the bracteoles wrap around the calyx tube; the calyx is white with three lobes at the top; the corolla tube is slightly longer than the calyx tube; the lip is round-spatulate, white, with a prominent, two-lobed yellow tip at the top, and the midrib is raised and purple; the stamens are about 1 cm long, and the connective appendages are 3-lobed. The capsule is oval, 1.5-2.2 cm long, 0.8-1.2 cm wide, and covered with lamellar, divided short soft spines; the seeds are purple-brown, covered with light brown membranous aril. The flowering period is from April to June, and the fruiting period is from June to September.

[Habitat distribution] Grown in dense forests in valleys. Mainly produced in Hainan.

[Properties] The fruit is oblong or oval, with obvious triangular prisms, 1.5-2 cm long and 0.8-12 cm in diameter; the surface is brown, covered with flaky, branched short soft thorns, with pedicel scars at the base; the peel is thick and hard. The seed cluster is small, with 5 to 17 seeds in each petal; the seeds are polyhedral, with a diameter of 1.5 to 2 mm. It has a fragrant smell and a light taste.

[Chemical composition] Contains volatile oils, including a-pinene, camphene, B-pinene, carene-3, limonene, eucalyptol and cymene.
