[Preparation method] There are two types of products: "catechu paste" and "formulated catechu".

【Properties】 ① Catechu paste

[Chemical composition] The heartwood of catechu contains 20-50% catechin tannic acid, 2-20% l- and dl-catechin, l- and dl-epicatechin, ochracetannin, and flavonols such as fisetin, quercetin, and quercetin. In addition to pigments, dark heartwood also contains protocatechu tannins and gallic acid tannins. The bark contains trace amounts of protocatechu tannin.

[Pharmacological action] ① The composition and uses of catechu paste are similar to those of brown catechu. It is used for leather making and dyeing in industry and as astringent and antidiarrheal in medicine (see "Gallac"). In vitro tests showed that its water decoction had a certain antibacterial effect on Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Corynebacterium diphtheriae, Proteus, Shigella dysenteriae, and Salmonella typhi. The preservative effect of tannins is mainly to prevent bacteria from obtaining food nutrients. On the culture medium, a 10% solution can kill bacteria within 24 hours; it can also inactivate influenza viruses in vitro. A 20% decoction can damage ascites cancer cells in vitro. Giving fasting rabbits catechin solutions of different concentrations can inhibit the peristalsis of the duodenum and small intestine, but can promote the reverse peristalsis of the cecum and have a laxative effect, but has almost no effect on the large intestine. Intravenous injection of catechu and other tannin-containing herbal preparations can reduce skeletal muscle tension in guinea pigs, lower blood pressure, accelerate breathing, and cause respiratory paralysis in large quantities. Repeated injections have a cumulative effect, and oral administration can allow the preparations to be absorbed in the small intestine. Catechu can inhibit the dissolution of fibrin by streptokinase.

[Usage and Dosage] For oral use: decocted in water, 0.3-1 qian; or made into pills or powder. For external use: grind into powder and sprinkle or apply on affected area.

[Additional prescription] ① Eliminate phlegm: catechu, mint leaves, and fine tea. Grind into honey pills and dissolve three to five pills in the mouth after meals. (Compendium of Materia Medica)

【Clinical application】 ①Treatment of indigestion in children

The original plant is a thorny shrub or small tree up to 6 meters high. The bark is grayish white. The leaves are bipinnate, with a club-shaped gland between each pinna. The leaflets are linear-oblong, 4 to 8 mm long and 1 to 1.5 mm wide. The spike inflorescence is usually 6 to 8 cm long; the lower part is asexual flowers, light pink or light purple, and the upper part is bisexual flowers, which are smaller and yellow.
