[Source] Medicinal material source: the roots and leaves of the plant Platycodon grandiflorum of the Melastomataceae family.

【Original form】 Shrub, 0.6-3m high. The stem is cylindrical, with many branches, densely covered with yellow-brown glandular dots when young, which fall off later. Leaves opposite; petiole 1-3cm long, covered with small glandular dots; leaf blade papery or hard papery, lanceolate, narrowly elliptic to elliptic-lanceolate, 6-18cm long, 2-5cm wide, apex acuminate, base cuneate, entire or with very inconspicuous small shallow wavy teeth, leaf surface covered with small glandular dots, falling off later; 3 (-5) basal veins, basal veins concave, lateral veins slightly convex, dorsal surface densely covered with small glandular dots. Cymes, axillary; pedicels about 3mm long, peduncles, pedicels, calyx densely covered with small glandular dots; calyx campanulate-funnel-shaped, about 4mm long, obtusely quadrangular, with 4 or 5 lobes, broadly ovate, about 1mm long, with small tips; petals 4 or 5, white to pink, ovate, acuminate or nearly acute at the apex, about 4mm long, with a small piece protruding at the upper right corner; stamens 4 or 5, equal in length, filaments about 4mm long, anthers about 4mm long, pink, knee-shaped, connective slightly swollen, extending downward to the base of the anther, sometimes almost tubercular; ovary inferior, altar-shaped, 4-chambered, with 4 small protrusions at the apex, covered with sparse small glandular dots. The capsule is elliptical and 4-lobed, enclosed by a persistent calyx with a flat rim and covered with small glandular dots. The flowering period is from June to August, and the fruiting period is from October to December.

[Habitat distribution] Ecological environment: Growing in broad-leaved forests at an altitude of 200-1300m.

【Cultivation】 Biological characteristics: Suitable for warm and humid climate. It is best to grow it in moist, humus-rich soil. Avoid drought.

【Functions and indications】Astringent and hemostatic; clearing away heat and detoxifying. Mainly used for postpartum bleeding, menorrhagia, enteritis, diarrhea, rheumatic bone pain, liver cirrhosis, sores, swelling and infection, burns, swelling and pain due to falls, traumatic bleeding, eczema, scabies

[Usage and Dosage] For oral use: decoction, 15-30g. For external use: take appropriate amount, mash and apply; grind into powder and apply; or decoct in water and wash with.
