Things to note on the first day of delivery

It is said that natural childbirth is more beneficial to the health of the fetus and the recovery of the mother. In fact, there are many things to pay attention to when giving birth naturally. After giving birth, women have consumed a lot of physical energy and their bodies are in a very weak state. At this time, you need to rest quietly, pay attention to getting a good rest, take care of your baby, and start breastfeeding as early as possible so that your baby can suck breast milk in the shortest time possible. So what should you do on the first day of delivery?

1. Get as much rest as possible

Childbirth is a very physically demanding process, so the most important thing on the first day after delivery is to get a good rest to ensure your physical strength is restored. Nowadays, many families room their mothers and babies in the same room. The baby is with the mother, and the mother needs to breastfeed about every 3-4 hours and change the baby's diaper. Once the baby cries, the mother will have even less time to sleep, so new mothers should try to take time to rest more.

2. Observe the amount of postpartum bleeding

Vaginal bleeding exceeding 400 ml within 24 hours after delivery is called postpartum hemorrhage. At present, postpartum hemorrhage is still the leading cause of maternal mortality in our country, so postpartum hemorrhage is also the most important issue that mothers need to pay attention to on the first day of delivery. Postpartum recovery experts say: Excessive bleeding in the mother can lead to shock, disseminated intravascular coagulation, and even death. Women are most likely to experience postpartum hemorrhage within two hours after delivery, so they still need to be observed in the delivery room after delivery. After two hours of observation in the delivery room, the mother returns to the ward and continues to be observed. If there is heavy vaginal bleeding, you should notify your doctor, find out the cause, and deal with it promptly.

3. Try to urinate within 4 hours after delivery

Mothers who give birth naturally should drink plenty of water and urinate promptly within 4 hours after delivery. During the delivery process, the descending fetal head will compress the bladder and urethra, helping to restore bladder function. If you hold your urine for too long and your bladder is overfilled, it will affect uterine contractions and lead to postpartum hemorrhage. A small number of postpartum women have difficulty urinating and may develop urinary retention, which is caused by long-term pressure on the bladder and perineal pain reflex. You can ask your doctor for acupuncture or medication treatment. If you still cannot urinate, you should undergo catheterization. Also pay attention to the care of the perineum, and rinse it with warm water after urination and defecation.

4. Let your baby suck the nipple half an hour after delivery

Normally, on the first day after delivery, there will be a small amount of thick, slightly yellow milk, which is colostrum. This is irreplaceable by any milk powder.

The baby can be allowed to suck the nipple half an hour after birth, which can establish lactation and milk ejection reflexes as early as possible and promote milk secretion. Under normal circumstances, the milk on the first day after delivery is a small amount of viscous, slightly yellow colostrum. Colostrum contains a large amount of antibodies, which will protect the baby from bacteria. Therefore, the baby should be fed colostrum as much as possible to reduce the occurrence of baby diseases. At the same time, sucking is beneficial to uterine contraction.

The ideal breastfeeding time is 5-10 minutes. On the first day after delivery, you can breastfeed every 1 to 3 hours. The time and frequency of breastfeeding depends on the needs of the baby and the mother's feeling of breast fullness. On the first day after delivery, the mother will feel weak and have pain in the wound, so she can choose to breastfeed in the side-lying position. After each breastfeeding, the newborn should be picked up and patted gently a few times to prevent milk from returning.

5. Start the activity appropriately

Women who give birth naturally can try to get out of bed and walk slowly 6 to 12 hours after giving birth. This can strengthen abdominal muscle contraction, promote uterine recovery, lochia discharge, increase appetite, and prevent urinary retention and constipation. On the second day after delivery, you can walk around indoors and do appropriate postpartum exercises, which can not only speed up your body's recovery, but also shrink your body, laying the foundation for postpartum weight loss.
