The taproot is slender, unequally thick, fibrous and twisted, more or less in the shape of a horsetail, and about 10 cm long. The rhizome is cylindrical and slender, 5-10 cm long, and covered with scales at the top. Stems 1-2, fascicled, usually unbranched. There are 5-8 basal leaves; petiole 2-10cm long, sheath-like at base; leaf blade narrowly oblong in outline, equal in length to petiole, 1.7-2.5cm wide, pinnately divided, with 7-15 lobes, sessile, then 2-3 deeply divided, the last lobe ovate to obovate, entire, nearly leathery, often imbricately overlapped; there are none or 1 stem leaf, which are small in shape and have short petioles. The raceme is terminal, 2-8cm long, with 5-15 flowers densely arranged; the bracts are deeply pinnate at the bottom and unlobed at the top; the pedicels are 10-15mm long, shorter than the bracts; the sepals are small, with teeth at the tip; the corolla is yellow-brown to light yellow, 16-21mm long, the serrations of the petals on the outer whorl are ovate-cucullate, the cockscomb-like process on the back is high and extends to the middle of the spur, the spur is cylindrical, about 1/2 the length of the whole petal, the claws of the petals on the outer whorl are swollen into an ovate shape, slightly concave; the ovary is oblong, twice as long as the pedicel, the stigma is square to halberd-shaped, and has two shallow lobes at the top. The capsule is oblong, about 12mm long and 2.5mm wide. The seeds are in 2 rows, 4-6 pieces, spherical, about 2mm in diameter, black and shiny. Flowering period is from June to August.
