[Original form] Leymus japonicus is a perennial herb. With downward and horizontal rhizomes. Culms solitary or clustered, erect, 40-100 cm tall, with 3-5 nodes, smooth and glabrous, or densely pubescent under inflorescence. The leaf sheath is smooth and glabrous, or with ciliated edges when young; the ligule is membranous, truncate, 1-1.5mm long; the leaf blade is 5-30cm long, 4-7mm wide, flat or involute, rough or with short soft hairs on the upper surface and edges, smooth or slightly rough on the lower surface. Spike inflorescence, erect, 10-15(-24)cm long, 10-17mm wide, gray-green; spike whorl with short soft hairs, nodes and edges with long soft hairs, internodes 3-7mm long, base up to 20mm; spikelets usually 2-3, rarely 1 or 4 born in each node, 10-20mm long, containing 4-7(-10) florets;

Spikelet axis internodes 1-1.5mm long, with short hairs; glume shorter than spikelet, linear-lanceolate, apex narrow like an awn, not covering the base of the first lemma, with inconspicuous 3 veins, rough in the upper half, with ciliated margins, the first glume shorter than the second, 8-15mm long; lemma lanceolate, margin membranous, apex acuminate or with 1-3mm long hairs, back with 5 veins, covered with short soft hairs or glabrous in the upper half, base with soft hairs about 1mm long, the first lemma 8-10(-14)mm long, palea equal to lemma, apex often finely 2-lobed, upper half of the ridge ciliated; anther 3.5-4mm long. Flowering and fruiting period is from June to October.

Ecological environment: It often grows in sandy land, plain oases and mountain grasslands.
