【Effects and Functions】 Clears away heat, detoxifies, promotes diuresis and reduces swelling. It is a heat-clearing and detoxifying drug classified under heat-clearing drugs.

[Clinical application] The dosage is 15-30 grams, 60-90 grams of fresh product, taken internally as a decoction, or mashed into juice, to treat colds, persistent high fever, sore throat, edema and oliguria, hot and painful stranguria, carbuncles and furuncles. For external use: mash and apply or mash the juice and apply to throat.

Treatment of stye: Take a fresh stem of Commelina communis, hold it at a 45° angle with your hands and place it on an alcohol lamp to burn the upper part. You will see water droplets and foamy liquid boiling out of the lower part. Then drop the boiling liquid on the eyelid and eyelid margin (the local swelling area and surrounding area of ​​the stye). You can also apply it on the surface of the eyelid skin while it is still hot. Use normal saline to flush the conjunctival sac before dripping the medicine. After application, the patient feels comfortable and no washing or any other treatment is required.

【Pharmacological Research】It has antibacterial, anti-endotoxin and analgesic effects. The water infusion or decoction of the stems and leaves of Commelina pallida, a plant of the same genus, can excite the uterus, constrict blood vessels, and shorten clotting time.

[Chemical composition] The petals contain flavonoids from Commelina tomentosa, which is a yellow pigment. It also contains Lolactone, terpenoids, β-sitosterol, commelin, flavonoid glycosides, and Harman.

[Contraindications] People with weak spleen and stomach should take it with caution.

[Prescription] ① For treating influenza: 30g of Commelina, 9g each of Perilla, Malan root, Bamboo leaf and Ophiopogon japonicus, and 15g of Fermented Black Beans. Decoction in water. (National Compendium of Chinese Herbal Medicines)

②Treat exogenous fever and sore throat: 30 grams of Commelina communis, 12 grams each of Bupleurum and Scutellaria baicalensis, 25 grams each of Lonicera japonica and Senecio chinensis, and 6 grams of Licorice. Decoction in water. (Sichuan Chinese Materia Medica, 1979)

③Treatment of high fever convulsions: 15 grams of Commelina communis and 6 grams of Uncaria rhynchophylla. Decoction in water. (Fujian Pharmacopoeia)
