How to take cough syrup

We will always encounter some troubles in life, such as setbacks or diseases. Whether it is disease or setbacks, we should face it positively. During the illness, we still have to choose good medicines to relieve our condition. So what is the method of taking cough syrup? Just put a small amount of syrup into a cup. Next, let us understand how to take cough syrup.

Cough syrup is an over-the-counter medicine that we often use in our daily lives. Because of its good taste and ease of use, it is especially popular among children and the elderly.

Coughing is a defensive reflex activity that occurs when the respiratory system is irritated. A mild cough can clear phlegm and foreign matter in the trachea and can be relieved naturally, and generally there is no need to take cough suppressants. Strong and frequent coughs, especially dry coughs, may aggravate the condition and cause complications, so cough suppressants need to be used while treating the disease.

Steps/Methods

When using cough syrup, you should first find out the cause of coughing and sputum, and then choose the right medicine. Generally, for frequent dry coughs, or irritating coughs with little sputum, cough suppressants should be the main focus. Western medicines mainly include Federal Cough Syrup, Otin Cough Syrup, and Keyu Syrup, which are centrally acting non-narcotic antitussive drugs that produce antitussive effects by controlling the medullary cough center. However, care should be taken not to take them for a long time to avoid dependence.

For coughs with a lot of phlegm, do not use cough syrup alone, because this may stop the cough but the phlegm cannot be discharged and remains in the respiratory tract, causing or aggravating the infection. For this type of cough, expectorants should be added. Commonly used expectorants include Mushu Tan, Qutanling oral liquid, etc.

Precautions

1. Cough syrup tastes sweet and is easy to accept. Some patients often take excessive doses when they have a cough, not realizing that this can lead to adverse reactions such as drug overdose. In addition, since the sugar content of syrup is more than 75%, diabetic patients cannot take it. Cough syrup should not be taken before meals because sugar can promote the secretion of digestive juice, make the stomach bloated and affect appetite.

2. Due to the cough suppressant effect of some cough syrups, the syrup relies on covering the surface of the pharyngeal mucosa to reduce the irritation of the inflammation to the mucosa. If you drink water immediately after taking the medicine, it will dilute the gastric juice, weaken the gastrointestinal tract's absorption of the drug, and at the same time reduce the drug concentration on the surface of the pharyngeal mucosa, reducing the drug's antitussive effect. Therefore, it is not advisable to drink water immediately after taking the medicine. Therefore, some doctors advise patients not to drink water for 5 minutes after drinking the syrup to ensure the effectiveness. If the viscous syrup is too irritating, you can also drink water. After all, most of the medicine can still be absorbed by the gastrointestinal tract.

There are some differences between the method of taking cough syrup and the method of taking capsules, but the effect and efficacy of cough syrup are more obvious than some capsules. Of course, some people may think that the taste of cough syrup is too strong. In this case, you can use some hot water to neutralize it. Although this is not as effective as pure syrup, the taste can be accepted by people.
