[Original form] It is the distant ancestor of the domestic chicken. It looks similar to the domestic chicken but is smaller, with a body length of about 60 cm. The corona, wattles, and exposed face and throat are all red. Iris reddish brown or orange-yellow. The feathers on the male's head and neck are dark red in front, turning golden yellow towards the back; the small coverts on the upper back and wings are black, and the large coverts have a bluish-purple sheen; the middle back and middle coverts are a deep dark red; the lower back and waist turn reddish-orange; and the flight feathers are black-brown. The tail feathers are long and hang obliquely. The tail feathers and upper tail coverts are black with metallic green reflections; the base of the feathers is white, which is particularly noticeable when flying. The lower body is pure black. The legs are short and strong, blue-gray in color, and have spurs. The female is small in shape and has a short tail. The upper body is mostly dark brown with yellow-brown insect-like spots. The head and neck are dark brown with red; the neck feathers are particularly long, dark brown in the center with golden feather edges. Breast reddish brown. The rest of the lower body is brown with yellow tints, and the undertail coverts are jet black. The feet have no spurs.

[Habitat distribution] It lives in dense forests in tropical and subtropical mountainous areas. Distributed in Yunnan, southern Guangxi, Hainan Island and other places.

[Functions and indications] Nourishes and warms the body, strengthens the muscles and bones, and enters the liver to replenish blood. Treat metrorrhagia and leukorrhea.

[Usage and Dosage] For oral use: decoct in water, 2 to 4 liang; or stir-fry with wine.
