[Source] It is the sedimentary shell of the Sichuan pearl oyster, an animal of the family Clamidae. When the water level dries up in winter, the fish are collected from the riverbed sand dam, the mud and sand are washed off, and the fish are dried in the sun.

[Original form] There are 2 shells, the same shape, oblong, about 16 cm long, about 7 cm high, short and round in the front, and elongated in the back; the top of the shell is large and located in the front of the shell. The shell is very thick, with the dorsal margin reaching 1 cm and the anterior margin about 5 mm. The shell surface is brown with dense annular growth lines, and the pearl layer on the inner wall of the shell is silvery white and shiny.

【Habitat distribution】 Lives in rivers and lakes. Distributed in Sichuan area. Produced in Sichuan.

[Properties] The shell is semi-elliptical or boat-shaped, and is mostly dry and loose due to being impacted by river water and covered by mud for a long time. The shell is heavy and thick, thinner at the ventral edge and thicker at the top. The surface is brown or gray-brown, the cuticle has mostly peeled off, becoming pink-gray, and the silvery-white inner layer is visible at the peeling point. The stratum corneum is relatively smooth and has fine ring patterns. The inner surface is also silvery white, shiny, and covered with white powdery cream, which is delicate and easy to stick to the hands. It is hard and will form layers on the cross section after being crushed. It smells slightly like lime. The best ones are white in color, with thick and heavy shells, and a pink-gray and shiny surface.

[Processing] Remove the mud and sand, crush and use raw, or calcine and then grind into powder. The powder is also called "clam powder" in Sichuan.

[Nature and flavor] Salty and astringent, slightly cold, non-toxic.

【Functions and indications】It can consolidate essence and reduce sweat, disperse lumps and soften hard masses. It is used to treat night sweats, spermatorrhea, red metrorrhagia and leucorrhea, scrofula and tuberculosis, external floating of deficiency heat, dizziness and irritability.

[Usage and Dosage] For oral use: decocted in water, 3 to 6 qian; or made into pills or powder.

【Note】 People with cold and swelling due to deficiency and weakness should not take this medicine.

[Additional prescription] ① Treat Yin deficiency and Yang hyperactivity, irritability and dizziness, external floating of deficiency heat and night sweats and spermatorrhea: Oyster and dragon bone. Take it as a decoction.
