The panicle is terminal, with a thick peduncle densely covered with reddish-brown scales and glandular hairs; the flowers are red, 4-5 cm in diameter; there are 5 sepals, obovate, about 1 cm long, and densely covered with brown-yellow scales on the outside; there are 5 petals, obovate, 1-2 cm long; there are many stamens; the ovary is superior, the style is simple, and the stigma is 2 shallowly lobed. Capsule ovate or nearly ovate, 2.5-4cm long, densely covered with long thorns, and split into 2 lobes. Seeds are numerous, obovate, dark red. Flowering period: autumn and winter.

[Habitat distribution] Ecological environment: Grown in warm and humid climate, loose soil, and rich in humus.

[Chemical composition] The leaves of redwood contain gallic acid, pyrogallol and isoscutellarin[1].

[Pharmacological action] The isoalpine baicalein contained in the leaves of Rhinoplastes chinensis has a strong inhibitory activity on rat lens aldose reductase.

[Toxicity] Baicalin contained in annatto leaves has a strong inhibitory activity on aldose reducing esters in rat lens[1].
