[Original form] 1. Potamogeton, perennial herb. The rhizome is well-developed, white, and multi-branched, and dormant buds are often formed at the top; the stem is about 50 cm long and often unbranched. Floating leaves are alternate, opposite under the inflorescence; petioles are 5-20cm long, broadly lanceolate to ovate-elliptical, 5-10cm long, 2-4cm wide, with many veins, connected at the tip; submerged leaves are alternate; petioles are shorter than those of floating leaves, and leaf blades are lanceolate to narrowly lanceolate. Early falling; stipules are membranous, 2-7cm long, with sharp tips, and sheath-like, clasping the stem; spike inflorescences grow in the axils of floating leaves; peduncles are 4-7cm long, thicker than the stem; spikes are 3-10cm long, densely covered with small yellow-green flowers. The nutlets are broadly obovate, 3-3.5 mm long, nearly straight ventrally, with 3 ridges on the back, two blunt ridges on the sides, and usually 2 protrusions at the base. Flowering period is from May to August.
