[Source] Medicinal material source: The root of the plant Pseudo-chaotiensis of the Melastomataceae family.

【Original form】 Shrub, 0.2-1.5m high. The stem is quadrangular, covered with sparse or dense and spreading prickles. Leaves opposite; petiole 2-15mm long, densely strigose; leaf blade firm papery, oblong-lanceolate, ovate-lanceolate to elliptic, 4-9cm long, 2-3.5cm wide, apex acute to nearly acuminate, base obtuse or nearly cordate, entire, ciliate, leaf surface strigose, dorsal surface only hairy on veins, 5 veins at base. The racemes are terminal, or there are 2 flowers per node, often only 1 flower develops, or the cymes form panicles; the pedicels are short or almost absent; the calyx tube is long-altar-shaped, the calyx is about 2 cm long, purple-red or purple-black, with many whorls of spiny, stalked, stellate hairs, up to 2.5 mm long, 4 lobes, linear-lanceolate or subulate, about 8 mm long; the petals are 4, purple-red, obovate, about 1.5 cm long, with ciliate margins; the stamens are 8, separated, often deviated to one side, the filaments are as long as the anthers, the anther tip has a long beak, the beak is as long as the anther chamber, the base of the connective is slightly swollen, slightly extended forward, and short-spurred backward; the ovary is semi-inferior, 4-chambered, ovate, sparsely bristled on the upper part, and there are 20-22 bristles on the top. Capsule ovate, 4 longitudinally cracked, persistent calyx shaped, truncate at apex, 1.1-1.8cm long, 5-8mm in diameter, constricted into a neck near the middle, covered with stalked spiny stellate hairs. The flowering period is from August to November, and the fruiting period is from October to December.

[Properties] The root head is enlarged and irregularly clustered, with the remnants of the stem at the top. The roots are oblong conical or cylindrical, slightly curved, 1-3 cm in diameter, and light brown to yellow-brown in surface. Rough, rough skin has mostly fallen off, or the remaining part is in flaky form. It is hard and not easy to break. The cross section is yellow-white with visible ring marks or irregular stripes. Slight odor, sour and astringent taste.

It is used for heat dysentery, watery diarrhea, painful stranguria, edema, hepatitis, cholecystitis, rheumatic pain, cough and asthma, fatigue cough, hemoptysis, bloody stool, metrorrhagia, irregular menstruation, amenorrhea, leucorrhea, sores, and hemorrhoids.

[Usage and Dosage] For oral use: decoction, 6-15g; soak in wine. For external use: take appropriate amount, decoct in water for washing, grind into powder or mash for application.
