【English name】 SEMEN ABUTILI

[Other names] Green hemp seeds, wild cotton seeds, white hemp seeds

[Source] This product is the dried mature seeds of Abutilon theophrastii Medic., a plant of the Malvaceae family. The ripe fruits are harvested in autumn, dried, the seeds are removed and impurities are removed.

[Properties] This product is triangular kidney-shaped, 3.5-6mm long, 2.5-4.5mm wide, and 1-2mm thick. The surface is gray-black or dark brown with sparse white hairs. There is an oval-shaped hilum in the depression, which is light brown with radial fine lines around it. The seed coat is hard, with 2 cotyledons, overlapping and folded, rich in oil. Slight odor, light taste.

[Identification] Cross section of this product: Epidermal cells in one row, oblong, some differentiated into single-cell non-glandular hairs; hypodermal cells in one row, slightly radially elongated. There is one row of palisade cells, which are long and columnar, about 88 μm long, with extremely thick walls. Linear cell cavities can be seen in the upper part, and their ends are swollen and contain small spherical crystals. The pigment layer has 4 to 5 rows of cells containing yellow-brown or reddish-brown substances. The endosperm and cotyledon cells contain fatty oil and aleurone grains, and the cotyledon cells also contain a few tiny calcium oxalate clusters.
