[Original morphology] The photinia serrata is a vine-like or upright shrub. The twigs are spiny, gray or gray-brown, pubescent, and often opposite. Leaves are opposite or alternate; petiole 2-7mm long, pubescent; leaf blade papery, elliptic, oblong or ovate-elliptic, 1-4.5 long, 0.7-2.5cm wide, with acute apex, rounded or nearly cordate base, serrulate margin, green and glabrous above, light green and glabrous or pubescent along veins below. Flowers are bisexual, sessile, yellow, fragrant, in spike or panicle inflorescences; inflorescence axis is 2-5cm long, pubescent or densely pubescent; calyx has 5 triangular lobes, sparsely pubescent on the outside; petals are 5, spoon-shaped, 2-lobed at the apex, often involute, shorter than sepals; style is very short, stigma is 3-lobed, ovary is 3-chambered. The drupe is nearly spherical, about 5mm in diameter, and purple-black when ripe. The flowering period is from September to October, and the fruiting period is from April to May of the following year.
