Caryopteris sphaerocephala is a small shrub with a fragrant plant, 0.5-1m tall. The young branches are densely covered with white hairs and glandular dots. Simple leaves are opposite; petiole 3-9mm long at the lower part, gradually becoming sessile upwards; leaf blade is papery, broadly ovate to ovate-oblong, 1-3cm long, 1.5-3cm wide, obtuse at the apex, truncated to rounded at the base, serrated at the margin, with villi and glandular dots on both sides, especially densely on the dorsal surface; 6-8 pairs of lateral veins, often covered with villi on the dorsal surface. The inflorescence is nearly capitate, axillary or terminal, densely covered with long hairs, and the peduncle is about 1 cm long; the calyx is campanulate, persistent, about 3 mm long, and increases to 6 mm when fruiting, the lobes are oblong-lanceolate, densely covered with long hairs and glandular dots on the outside; the corolla is about 6 mm long, light blue or lavender, 5-lobed in the upper part, two-lipped, the lobe in the lower lip is larger, the edge is fringed, the lobe has long hairs and glandular dots on the outside, the corolla tube is about 5 mm long, with a hair ring at the throat; 4 stamens and the style extend out of the corolla tube; the ovary is glabrous. The capsule is oblong, about 2-3mm long, usually enclosed in the calyx, with 4 lobes, and the edges of the lobes have inconspicuous wings or are almost wingless. Flowering and fruiting period is August-September.
