[Source] This product is the dried persistent calyx or persistent calyx with fruit of Physalis alkekengi L. var. franchetii (Mast.) Makino, a plant of the Solanaceae family. The fruits are harvested and dried in autumn when they are ripe and the persistent calyx is red or orange-red.

[Properties] This product is slightly lantern-shaped, mostly flattened, 3 to 4.5 cm long and 2.5 to 4 cm wide. The surface is orange-red or orange-yellow, with 5 obvious longitudinal ridges and a network of fine veins between the ridges. The apex is gradually pointed, slightly 5-lobed, the base is slightly truncate, and the center is sunken with a fruit stalk. It is light, flexible, hollow, or contains brown-red or orange-red fruits. The fruit is spherical, mostly flattened, 1 to 1.5 cm in diameter, with wrinkled skin and many seeds inside. It has a faint smell, the calyx tastes bitter, and the fruit tastes sweet and slightly sour.

[Identification] Take 1g of the powder of this product, add 10ml of petroleum ether (30-60℃), soak for 15 minutes, discard the petroleum ether liquid, evaporate the residue, add 10ml of chloroform, soak for 30 minutes, shake from time to time, filter, and concentrate the filtrate to 1ml as the test solution. Take another 1g of Pleurotus eryngii reference medicinal material and prepare the reference medicinal material solution in the same way. According to the thin layer chromatography method (Appendix Ⅵ B), 10-15 μl of each of the above two solutions were taken and spotted on the same silica gel G thin layer plate, and petroleum ether (60-90℃)-acetone (20:1) was used as the developing solvent. The plate was developed, taken out and dried. In the chromatogram of the test sample, an identical main orange-yellow spot appears at the corresponding position in the chromatogram of the control medicinal material.
