[Source] Medicinal material source: the whole plant of Amaranthaceae.

【Original form】Climbing shrub. The stem is 2-6m long, with many drooping branches, covered with soft hairs when young, and then become glabrous. Simple leaves are alternate; petiole is 1-4cm long, glabrous; leaf blade is ovate or ovate-lanceolate, a few are ovate-cordate, 4-15cm long, 2-8cm wide, apex acuminate or caudal, base is broadly cuneate, rounded or nearly truncated, often asymmetrical, sparsely pubescent on both sides, later becoming glabrous. The racemes are axillary and terminal, and then form a multi-branched panicle; the rachis and branches are pubescent; each flower has 1 bract and 2 bracteoles, the bracts are narrow and triangular; the bracteoles are ovate; the flowers have a foul odor: 5 tepals, light green or yellowish, reddish when fruiting, reflexed after anthesis, with obtuse tips; 5 stamens, filaments fused at the base into a very short cup, anthers 2-chambered; ovary superior; 3 stigmas, reflexed when fruiting. The berry is nearly spherical, red, with three longitudinal grooves, and a persistent perianth underneath. Seeds 1-6, flattened reniform, black, shiny. The flowering and fruiting period is from October to March of the following year.

[Habitat distribution] Ecological environment: Growing under forests or in thickets on hillsides at an altitude of 100-2200m.

[Properties] Identification: The branches are slender, cylindrical, branched, and slightly swollen at the nodes; young branches have soft hairs, while old branches are hairless. Most leaves have shrunk or fallen off. The complete leaves are ovate or ovate-lanceolate, withered green, 4-15cm long, 2-8cm wide, and entire. The racemes are axillary or terminal, or compounded into panicles; the pedicels are short, the flowers are small, green or yellowish when fresh, and red when fruiting. The berries are nearly spherical, red, and turn brown when dry.
