[Other names] Round jujube, rattan pear (Henan Handbook of Chinese Herbal Medicine), peach vine (Guizhou Medicinal Plant Catalogue).

[Source] It is the roots and leaves of Actinidia arguta, a plant of the Actiniaceae family. Dig roots in autumn and winter; pick leaves in summer.

[Original form] Large vine, can reach more than 30 meters in length. Young branches sometimes have sparse grayish-white hairs, while old branches are smooth; the stem bark is light gray-brown, and the stem pith is brown and flaky. The leaves are membranous to papery, ovate, elliptical-ovate or rectangular, 6-13 cm long, 5-9 cm wide, with a pointed or short-tailed tip. The base is round or heart-shaped, rarely nearly cuneate, with sharp serrations on the edge, light brown or grayish white soft hairs in the vein axils on the underside, and glabrous elsewhere. The petioles and veins often turn black when dry. Axillary cymes have 3 to 6 flowers; flowers are white, 1.2 to 2 cm in diameter; 5 tepals, sepals only hairy on the edges; stamens numerous; styles filiform, numerous. The berries are spherical to rectangular, smooth, with a short tail-like mouth at the tip. Flowering period is from May to June. The fruit ripens in August.

[Habitat distribution] Grown in valleys, under forests and in bushes. Distributed in Northeast China, North China, Northwest China and the Yangtze River Basin.

【Chemical composition】 The whole herb contains actinidin.

【Properties and flavors】 Jiangxi "Chinese Herbal Medicine": "light and slightly astringent."

【Functions and indications】 Strengthens the stomach, clears away heat and promotes the removal of dampness. Treat indigestion, vomiting, diarrhea, jaundice, and rheumatic joint pain.

[Usage and Dosage] For oral use: decoct in water, 0.5 to 2 liang.

[Additional prescription] ① For the treatment of esophageal cancer: kiwi pear root with water bayberry root 2 liang, wild grape root 1 liang, half-branched scutellaria 5 qian, half-flowered scutellaria 5 qian, phoenix tail grass 5 qian, and Imperata root 5 qian. Decoction in water. (Jiangxi Journal of Chinese Herbal Medicine)

[Clinical Application] Treatment of gastric cancer: Use the root of Pyrus glutinosa and Polygonum cuspidatum to make a syrup using ethanol extraction (each 60 ml contains 2 liang of Pyrus glutinosa root and 1 liang of Polygonum cuspidatum), take 20 to 30 ml each time, 3 times a day, before meals. A total of 18 cases were treated, including 9 cases of gastric antrum cancer, 2 cases of lesser curvature gastric cancer, 4 cases of gastric fundus and cardia cancer, and 3 cases of gastric body cancer; the shortest medication period was 1 week and the longest was 3 months. The results showed marked effect in 3 cases (primary tumor or metastasis lesions shrank by more than 1/2, symptoms and signs improved significantly, and X-ray confirmed obvious shrinkage and improvement of lesions) , effective in 7 cases (primary tumor or metastasis lesions shrank by less than 1/2, symptoms and signs improved, and X-rays showed varying degrees of improvement) and ineffective in 8 cases. According to preliminary observations, this drug has the effect of alleviating symptoms of gastric cancer in the short term, especially for patients with upper abdominal pain accompanied by vomiting and constipation. It has good analgesic, antiemetic and laxative effects and can increase appetite. It has a better effect on gastric antrum and lesser curvature cancer. The masses in a few patients were reduced. However, the medication may cause side effects such as dizziness, palpitations, upper abdominal discomfort or diarrhea; and the symptom relief period is short, and some may recur. In addition, there are also reports of using only the root of the vine pear to treat cancer among the people. That is, use 2 to 5 taels of the raw medicine, add water and simmer for more than 3 hours, take it in two doses, 15 to 20 days as a course of treatment, usually four courses, with a few days of rest between courses.
