[Source] Medicinal material source: The roots and rhizomes of Primula calamus, a plant of the Primulaceae family.

[Original form] Perennial herb. The rhizome is thick, woody, 4-13cm long, and densely covered with residual dead petioles, which are stacked in a fish-scale pattern. New leaves grow in clusters at the top of the rhizome; petiole 2-10cm long, brown pubescent, widened near the base, slightly sheath-like; leaf blade ovate to obovate-lanceolate, 3-8cm long; 2-5cm wide, with rounded or obtuse tip, base broadly cuneate to slightly cordate, edges serrated, both sides brown pubescent, with raised wrinkles on the upper side, yellow powder on the lower side, raised veins, and thicker texture of old leaves. The pedicel is erect, 7-25cm high, and covered with brown glandular hairs; the umbel has 7-18 flowers and is covered with brown soft hairs; the bracts are leaf-lanceolate, 1-3cm long, with a distinct midrib and slender lateral veins; the pedicels are slightly shorter than the bracts at first, and can reach 4cm in length when in fruit; the calyx is nearly tubular, 12-15mm long, covered with soft hairs on the outside, with yellow powder at the base of the inner surface when in fruit, and is split for about 1/3 of the total length, with lobes ovate-oblong, and nearly rounded or obtuse at the apex; the corolla is high-footed saucer-shaped, dark golden yellow, with the tube only slightly longer than the calyx, the diameter of the crown brim is 1.5-2.5cm, the lobes are broadly obcordate to nearly rounded, and the apex is 2-lobed; long-style flowers: the stamens are attached 5-6mm from the base of the crown tube, and the style is about 9mm long; short-style flowers: the stamens are attached about 9mm from the base of the crown tube, and the style is about 2.5mm long. Capsule ovoid, shorter than calyx. Flowering period is April-May.
