[Source] Medicinal material source: The root or stem of the plant Rhizoma Cibotii of the family Nelumbo nucifera.

[Original form] Red-flowered ivy vine. The stem is ribbed and the young branches are covered with yellow-brown hairs. Leaves are alternate; petiole is 4-10cm long; leaves are finger-shaped compound leaves with 3 leaflets, leaflets are ovate to obovate-elliptic or ovate-elliptic, 6-11cm long, 3-7cm wide, obtuse at apex, rounded or nearly cordate at base, midrib above is pubescent, midrib below is slightly pubescent or glabrous, and there are about 4 pairs of lateral veins. The cymes form panicles, grow in leaf axils, and are densely covered with yellow-brown hairs; there are 5 sepals, which are purple-red, oblong, and covered with short soft hairs on the outside; the petals are the same shape as the sepals, and are rose-red; there are 5 stamens, the reduced stamens are petal-shaped, membranous, serrated at the apex, and open-mouthed on the back with petioles; the ovary is inferior, the style is covered with yellow hairs, 5mm long, the stigma is enlarged into a cockscomb shape, and the disk has 5 glands. The fruit has 4 wings, which are of different sizes, with the large ones being 2.5-3.5cm long and the small ones being 0.1-1cm long. The flowering period is from June to November, and the fruiting period is from December to April to May of the following year.

[Habitat distribution] Ecological environment: Grown in dense forests in valleys or sparse woods and shrubs or in mixed woods beside streams.

【Cultivation】 1. Biological characteristics: It prefers warm and humid climate. It needs moderate shade, is slightly cold-resistant, and should be planted in deep and fertile sandy loam.

【Properties】 Characteristic identification: The stem is cylindrical, with a few branches and a diameter of 3-7mm. The surface is gray-brown to tan, with obvious longitudinal grooves. Young branches are covered with golden brown hairs, while old branches are hairless. It is hard, with an irregular cross section, a thin, brown outer bark, and a light yellow-brown heartwood. It has a faint smell and tastes spicy, sweet and astringent.

【Functions and indications】 Dispel wind and relieve pain; disperse blood stasis and reduce swelling. Mainly used for rheumatic joint pain; swelling and pain caused by falls; snake and insect bites; sequelae of poliomyelitis

[Usage and Dosage] For oral use: decoct in water, 9-15g; or soak in wine. For external use: Apply appropriate amount and soak in wine and rub.
