[Source] It is the leaves of the leguminous plant Suaeda scabra . Collected in summer and sun-dried.

[Original form] A vine-like shrub with downward-curved hooked thorns all over the plant and all parts covered with yellow soft hairs. The leaves are 30-45 cm long; there are 6-9 pairs of pinnae, opposite, and there is often a pair of stipule-shaped small hooks at the attachment of the leaflets; there are 6-12 pairs of leaflets, oblong, 1.5-4 cm long, 1.5-2 cm wide, obtuse at the tip with a small convex tip, and oblique base; the stipules are large, leaf-shaped, often divided and fall off. The racemes are axillary, with long stalks, dense in the upper part and sparse in the lower part; the bracts are cone-shaped, hairy, folded outwards, and gradually fall off when flowering; the calyx has 5 lobes, both inside and outside covered with rusty hairs; the petals are yellow, or the top one has red spots, oblanceolate, not longer than the calyx, and have claws. The pods are rectangular, 5 to 7 cm long, with a beak at the top and covered with long and thin thorns on the outside. There are 2 to 3 seeds, which are nearly spherical, lead gray and shiny. Flowering period is from August to October. The fruiting period is from October to March of the following year.

[Habitat distribution] Grown in sparse woods, bushes, and wastelands in seaside villages. Distributed in Guangdong, Guangxi, Taiwan and other places.

[Chemical composition] The pods contain 30-48% tannins. The seeds contain sterols, saponins, fatty oil and starch.

[Pharmacological action] The bitter ingredient contained in the seeds, bark and leaves is called Bonducin or Guilandinin, a resin acid, which is said to have quinine-like antimalarial effect, but is ineffective against experimental malaria; its antipyretic effect has yet to be confirmed. This bitter component can be further divided into four parts: the "A" part has certain antibacterial effects; the "B" part has antipyretic and diuretic effects on rabbits, and also has certain antibacterial effects; the "D" part has a significant earthworm-killing (anthelmintic) effect. The bitter components and alcohol extracts of the seeds have the effect of slightly lowering dog blood pressure and inhibiting frog heart rate, while the water extract has no such effect.
