Safflower, also known as Duhonghua and golden red flower, is a dicotyledonous plant. It belongs to the Asteraceae family. In fact, the safflower is not bright red, but orange-red. It also contains 15α, 20β-dihydroxy-Δ4-pregnen-3-one. It also contains fatty oil called safflower oil, which is a glyceride of palmitic acid, stearic acid, arachidic acid, oleic acid, linoleic acid, and linolenic acid. The flowers contain safflower glycoside, safflower quinone glycoside and neosafflower glycoside; the light yellow flowers contain neosafflower glycoside and trace amounts of safflower glycoside.

Medicinal Uses of Safflower

[Usage and Dosage] For oral use: decoction, 3-10g. It is better to use less for nourishing blood and regulating blood; it is better to use more for promoting blood circulation and removing blood stasis.

Functions of safflower

[Functions and indications] Promote blood circulation and regulate menstruation, dissipate blood stasis and relieve pain. It is used for amenorrhea, dysmenorrhea, lochia retention, abdominal masses, bruises, and swollen and painful hemorrhoids.

The Illustrated Classic of Materia Medica records that "Red and blue flowers are also safflowers. They are now found everywhere. They are grown in farms and gardens. In winter, seeds are planted in mature soil. In spring, seedlings grow. In summer, flowers bloom. The lower part of the flower is a quilt with many thorns. The stamens emerge from the quilt. Gardeners collect them in the dew. After they have been collected, they emerge again. When all are gone, they stop. The pods contain white fruits as big as red beans. The flowers are dried quickly to dye true red and to make rouge. They are good for treating postpartum blood disease. The fruit is the same. The leaves are quite blue, so it is named blue."

Safflower is a good friend of women. It can be used as a daily health care product. Put a small pinch of it in a water cup every day, not too much. Pour boiling water on it, simmer for a few minutes and then drink it directly. It is especially suitable for office workers who don’t have time to cook safflower.
