[Original morphology] Epiphytic herb, 8 to 35 cm high. The rhizome is slender and horizontal, densely covered with scales; the scales are linear and lanceolate, shield-shaped at the base, light brown, and membranous; the root system is well developed, and the rootlets around the fibrous roots are short and densely grown. The leaves are sparse, with petioles 4 to 17 cm long, straw-colored, and glabrous; the leaf blades are 6 to 10 cm long, often 3-lobed, rarely 2-lobed or simple, with a rounded or slightly decurrent base; the leaf blades or lobes are linear-lanceolate, acuminate at the apex, cartilaginous at the margins, green above, gray-green below, each lobe has one main vein, and lateral veins are nearly opposite. There are about 20 to 30 pairs of them, reaching the leaf margin, forming a diamond-shaped mesh, with a notch between each pair of lateral veins. The sporangium is round and solitary in the middle of the mesh, slightly closer to the main vein.

[Habitat distribution] Grown beside moist ravines or under woods. It is distributed in southwest, central and eastern my country, and north to southern Shaanxi, Shandong Peninsula and Lushun. Produced in Jiangsu, Sichuan, Fujian, Jiangxi, Shaanxi and other places.

[Properties] The whole plant is dried, with densely covered shiny yellow-brown scales on the rhizome and slender brown fibrous roots underneath. The leaves are basal, with slender petioles; the leaves are wrinkled gray-yellow-green, and the unfolded leaves are 3-lobed or 2-lobed, or unlobed. The lobes are lanceolate, thin and papery, and soft. There is a row of reddish-brown, round sporangia on each side of the midrib on the back of the leaf. Slight odor, light taste. The best ones are those with large leaves and many sporangia.

【Functions and indications】 Clears away heat. Cools blood, promotes diuresis and detoxifies. Treat typhoid fever, thirst, convulsions, tonsillitis, bacterial dysentery, chronic hepatitis, hematuria, bloody stool, carbuncles and furuncles.

[Usage and Dosage] For internal use: decoct in water, 2-5 qian (1-2 liang for fresh); grind into powder or soak in wine. For external use: mash and apply.
