Sorghum, an annual cultivated crop. The culm height varies with the cultivation conditions and variety, and there are usually no white hairs on the nodes. The leaf sheath is glabrous or covered with white powder; the ligule is stiff and papery, with a rounded tip and ciliated edges; the leaf blades are narrow and lanceolate, up to 50 cm long and about cm high. The panicle has whorled, alternate or opposite branches; the sessile spikelets are ovate-elliptical, 5-6mm long, the lower part of the glume is hard leathery, smooth and glabrous when mature, and the upper part and margins are pubescent, bisexual, the stalked spikelets are male or neutral; the rachis internodes and spikelet stalks are linear, with cilia on the margins, but no longitudinal grooves; the back of the first glume is raised or flat, becoming hard and shiny when mature, with a narrow involute margin that gradually folds inward toward the apex, the second glume is boat-shaped with ridges; the first lemma is transparent and membranous, the second lemma is oblong or linear, with two lobes at the apex, with awns extending from between the lobes, or the entire margin is without awns. The caryopsis is obovate, and the lemma is exposed when mature. The flowering and fruiting period is autumn.
