[Source] Medicinal material source: the whole plant of Coptis chinensis, a plant of the Meliaceae family.

[Original form] Coptis chinensis is a dwarf shrub, 15-30cm tall. The stem is unbranched. Odd-pinnate compound leaves clustered at stem top, 5-7cm long including petiole, pubescent; 5-7 leaflets, terminal leaflet with petiole, lanceolate or oblong-lanceolate, 3-7cm long, 1.5-3cm wide, acuminate and obtuse at apex, cuneate at base, with irregular coarse serrations on margin; lateral leaflets sessile, with the smallest pair at base, rounded or obtuse at apex, usually entire; middle leaflets larger, ovate, oblong or obovate-lanceolate, 2-4.5cm long, entire or with a few obtuse teeth at apex. The racemes are axillary, usually with 2-3 flowers and bracts; the flowers are white, up to 3 cm long; the pedicels are 0.5-2 cm long; pubescent; the sepals are 5-lobed to the base, with lanceolate teeth and pubescent on the outside; the petals are 5, fused with the stamen tube, separated at the top, the filament tube of the stamens is torn at the tip, and there are 10 anthers; the ovary is pubescent. The capsule is oblate, 5-8mm in diameter, pubescent, with a persistent calyx at the base. The seeds are light brown with a concave surface. The flowering period is from May to June, and the fruiting period is from June to November.

[Habitat distribution] Ecological environment: Grown in the shade and moist places under the forest at an altitude of 1000-1400m.

【Functions and indications】 Dispel wind and dredge meridians; promote qi circulation and relieve pain; stop malaria. Mainly used for colds and fevers; injuries from falls; rheumatic pain; stomachache; malaria

[Usage and Dosage] For oral administration: decoct in water, 5-9g; or grind into powder, 1.5-3g each time; or soak in wine. For external use: take appropriate amount and mash it for application.
