Earth dragon bone is a relatively common herb with a mild and bitter nature. It has the effects of promoting blood circulation and relieving pain, reducing swelling, and removing phlegm and dampness. It can also treat some strains and sprains. After being crushed, it can be applied to the affected area for a few days to be effective. This herb is rarely seen in normal times and can usually only be purchased in Chinese medicine stores.

Source and Origin

The rhizome of Dioscorea nipponica Mak., a plant of the Dioscoreaceae family. Distributed in Northeast China, North China, Central China, East China, Sichuan, Gansu, Shaanxi and other places.

Flavor

Bitter, flat.

Function and indications

Dispel wind, promote blood circulation, relieve pain, reduce swelling, resolve phlegm and relieve cough.

① Treat wind-cold-dampness arthralgia, strain and sprain, acute suppurative osteoarthritis, chronic bronchitis, coronary heart disease, angina pectoris, malaria, and recently used for thyroid adenoma and hyperthyroidism. Decoction: 9-15g.

② Mash and apply to carbuncles, swellings and malignant ulcers.

Chemical composition

This product contains various steroidal saponins such as dioscin and a small amount of 25-iso-spirosteroid-3,5-diene.

Pharmacological effects of ground dragon bone

The water extract of the rhizome has an antitussive and expectorant effect on mice, and an antiasthmatic effect on guinea pigs. In vitro tests showed that the decoction has anti-influenza virus effects, and also has inhibitory effects on Staphylococcus aureus, Sarcina, Escherichia coli, Catarrhalis, Neisseria meningitidis, and Streptococcus A. Total saponins can significantly reduce blood cholesterol and blood pressure in rabbits, increase urine volume and improve coronary circulation.
