Several uses of the traditional Chinese medicine Brucea javanica

Brucea javanica is not the gall of a crow. It is the fruit of a plant that likes a warm and humid climate and is produced in Guangxi and Guangdong. Its main function is to clear away heat, detoxify and treat malaria. When used externally, Brucea javanica has a certain corrosive effect. The Brucea javanica kernels can be crushed and applied to corns or warts to remove corns and common warts. Brucea javanica tastes bitter and is slightly poisonous. It can damage our gastrointestinal tract, liver and kidneys, so it should be used in moderation. Patients with gastrointestinal diseases and liver and kidney diseases who need to use Brucea javanica for treatment should take the medicine with caution under the guidance of an experienced Chinese medicine practitioner.

①Treatment of amoebic dysentery

According to observations of 50 and 65 cases, the recent cure rates were 72% and 94% respectively. The recurrence rate in the group of 50 cases was 6%. In most cured cases, symptoms disappear within 2 to 7 days, and stool microscopic examinations usually turn negative within 3 to 5 days. Judging from the length of time it takes for the stool to turn negative, it seems that Brucea javanica has a better effect on trophozoites than on cysts. It is believed that Brucea javanica is effective for both acute and chronic cases. Side effects include nausea, vomiting, dizziness, abdominal pain, diarrhea, etc., among which diarrhea is more common, but it does not affect the treatment. Usage: Most of the time, oral administration and enema are used together, with a course of 7 to 10 days. Take orally 3 times a day. Adults use 10 to 20 seeds of Brucea javanica each time, or as few as 4 seeds. Children use 1 to 2 seeds per year. Put into capsules and swallow. For enema, use 15 to 20 seeds of Brucea javanica, crush them and soak them in 200 ml of 1% sodium bicarbonate solution for 2 hours. Then perform retention enema once a day or every other day. It can be used simultaneously with oral administration or used alone after 4 days of oral administration.

②Treatment of malaria

It is effective against Plasmodium vivax malaria, Plasmodium malariae and Falciparum malariae, and the attacks can be controlled in most cases after taking the medicine. Usage: For adults, put 10 grains of Brucea javanica seeds into capsules and swallow them 3 to 4 times a day. On the 4th and 5th days, the dose can be halved. The whole treatment course is 5 days. For children under 10 years old, take 6 pills each time; for children under 14 years old, take 8 pills each time. The side effects are significant, mainly gastrointestinal reactions, such as upper abdominal discomfort, fullness, loss of appetite, increased frequency of bowel movements, and vomiting in a few patients.

It is not advisable to take Brucea javanica for a long time to avoid poisoning and damage to the internal organs. Do not take more than 2 grams at a time. When used externally, use it in moderation. If common warts grow on the face, it is not advisable to use Brucea javanica to treat them. Therefore, Brucea javanica is somewhat corrosive, and the skin on the face is delicate and rich in blood vessels. Applying Brucea javanica on the face will cause swelling, so you should go to a regular hospital for treatment.
