[Other names] Stone Cliff Wind, Two-Headed Hammer

[Source] Medicinal material source: the roots or leaves of the leguminous plant Sophora japonica.

[Original form] A climbing shrub. Simple leaves are alternate; petiole is 1-3cm long, slightly swollen at both ends; stipules are small and fall off early, without stipules; leaf blade is ovate to oblong, 5-13cm long, 2-6cm wide, gradually pointed at the apex, rounded at the base, glabrous; veins are raised on both sides, with 5-7 pairs of lateral veins; leaves are nearly leathery. 3-5 flowers are arranged in umbel-shaped racemes 2-5 cm long; the peduncle is short, slender, and sparsely pubescent; the calyx is bell-shaped, about 4 mm long, and glabrous; the corolla is white, about 1 cm long; there are 10 stamens, separate or fused at the base, of unequal length; the ovary is pubescent. The pods are swollen, ovate or nearly round, 2.5-3cm long, about 1.5cm wide, acute at both ends, glabrous, and crack when ripe. The fruit lobes are thin and leathery, with obvious reticulate veins. There are 1-2 seeds, which are oval, slightly flat, with black or red seed coat and white, annular raised caruncle. Flowering period is from May to September, and fruiting period is September.
