[Original morphology] Celastrus orbiculatus is a deciduous vine-like shrub, up to 10 meters tall. Simple leaves are alternate; petioles are up to 15mm long; leaves are papery, elliptical, broadly ovate or round, 5-10cm long, 2.5-5cm wide, with acute or acuminate apex, serrated margins and slightly obtuse base. The panicle cyme is terminal, 5-15cm long, with branches at the base nearly equal in length to branches above; dioecious, pedicels 3-5mm long, jointed at the base, flowers light green, 3-4mm in diameter, 5-merous; the stamens of male flowers are attached to the edge of the cup-shaped disk, filaments longer than petals, and the reduced ovary is short columnar; female flowers have reduced stamens, ovary spherical, disk cup-shaped, surrounded by the base of the ovary, stigma 3-lobed, apex 2 shallowly lobed. The capsule is nearly spherical, up to 1 cm in diameter, 3-lobed, and each lobe contains 1-2 seeds. Flowering period is from April to June.

[Habitat distribution] Ecological environment: Growing in hillside bushes.

[Pharmacological action] The chloroform extract of the root bark and stem of the truncatula contains anti-Gram-positive coccinoids. In vitro antimalarial tests have shown that it has very strong activity against Plasmodium falciparum. Rats that took vine oil orally for 3-7 days showed significant improvements in learning ability and memory compared to those given vasopressin by intraperitoneal injection.
