Simple leaves are alternate; petioles are up to 20 cm long or longer, with obvious longitudinal stripes, fused to stipules at the base, with oblong lenticels and flat spines; stipules are separated into linear shapes at the tip; leaves are papery, palmately 5-7 deeply lobed, deeply lobed to 3/4 of the leaf blade, with 5-7 palmate veins, 20-40 cm long, wider than long, and cordate at the base; leaf lobes are narrowly elliptic, oblong to ovate-oblong, 13-30 cm long, 6-12 cm wide, with acuminate to acuminate tips, ciliate-serrulate margins, sparsely covered with setae on the upper side, setae along the veins on the lower side, and lateral veins prominent on both sides. Umbels form large panicles, 20-30cm long, with axis and branches densely covered with flat spines and rigid procumbent hairs; bracts triangular to triangular-lanceolate; umbels have several flowers, white; bracteoles are linear; calyx has 5 teeth; petals are 5, triangular-oblong; stamens are 5; ovary is semi-inferior, 2-chambered, styles are fused into a short column. The fruit is oblate to ovoid, black when ripe, with a slender stalk and persistent style. 2 seeds. The flowering period is from September to October, and the fruiting period is from December to March of the following year.
