Mountain cockscomb, also known as: small golden cockscomb tail, small-leaf cockscomb tail.

【Habitat distribution】

It grows beside ditches, roadsides, on rocks and in shady and wet places. Distributed in the Yangtze River Basin, it reaches southern Shaanxi and south to Fujian and northern Guangdong and Guangxi.

【Properties】

The rhizome is short, shaped like a chicken's head, and dark brown; 5 to 8 cm long and 3 to 4 cm thick. The surface is densely covered with numerous petiole remnants, with brown-black curved rootlets and reddish-brown, slightly shiny scales at the top. The petiole residue is thin, square in cross section, with 3 to 4 vascular bundles, faint odor and light taste. The best ones are those with large rhizomes and fewer fibrous roots.

【Chemical composition】

The rhizome contains tannins, volatile oils, gums, sugars, amino acids, as well as guanzhong glycosides, guanzhongren glycosides, astragaloside, and isoquercetin.

【Nature and flavor】

Bitter, slightly cold.

【Function and indications】

Clears away heat and detoxifies, cools blood and calms wind, disperses phlegm and stops bleeding, and expels hookworms, ascarids, red worms, and pinworms. It is used to treat colds, febrile rashes, sha poisoning, malaria, dysentery, hepatitis, liver yang dizziness and headache, vomiting blood and bloody stools, metrorrhagia, leucorrhea, mastitis, scrofula, and injuries from falls.
